NEWARK, NJ - Four people are dead, and one person is in critical condition after an early morning crash involving two cars and a tractor-trailer. The fiery crash happened around 4:15 a.m. on Frelinghuysen Avenue near Evergreen Avenue.
One of the vehicles in the crash was reduced to a pile of twisted rubble.
Frelinghuysen Avenue was closed in both directions while emergency personnel work at the scene.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Interim Newark Public Safety Director Raul Malave announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that resulted in the death of four people.
At approximately 4:22 am today, Saturday, July 23, a crash occurred on the 800 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark involving a tractor-trailer, a Chevrolet Malibu, and a Chrysler 300. The crash caused a fire resulting in the deaths of four people.
The driver and three passengers in the Malibu were killed. They were pronounced dead at the scene at 6:11 am. The driver of the Chrysler was extricated from the car and is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
The names of the victims are not being released until they are formally identified.
